Hardwood Floors Magazine recently announced their 2015 Wood Floor of the Year winners. Whether you're passionate about wood flooring (like us) or not, everyone can appreciate the quality craftsmanship, time, and effort that went into these projects.Members’ Choice Award/Best Limited Species: Real Antique Wood: This black walnut slab live-edge floor was sourced from a tree damaged during Hurricane Irene.
Best Restoration: Yantarnaya Pryad-Parquet: A number of tree species went into the restoration of this parquet floor, located in the State Hermitage Museum in Russia, including bog oak, maple, pear, sapele and walnut. The company was able to save 75 percent of the original floor, which dates to the 1850s.
Best Residential: Ourada Designs: An owner came to Tom Ourada, owner of Ourada Designs, with a heap of scrap wood and a plea for last year’s Members’ Choice winner to make a floor out of the waste material. The final floor took 168 hours to complete.
Best Reclaimed: Archetypal Imagery Corp.: The oak used for this floor was reclaimed from Revolutionary War-era barns in the United States. The company used the wood scraps left over after the planks on the perimeter of the floor were cut to create the dovetail parquet design in the center. Each dovetail was cut by jigsaw.
